Rudy Makes It Official

Rudy Giuliani filed the formal paperwork to run for President. I'm really pleased because in the past few weeks there were a number of stories indicating that Rudy might not be serious about running.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't think of another example of the man being so right for the times since FDR became President in 1933. We so badly need a leader in America. Not someone who wants to have a conversation with the country. Not someone who is trying to convince us that there are two Americas. Not one of the dime a dozen politicians who are little more than polls and egos.

You can watch Rudy's appearance on last night's Hannity and Colmes (in two segments) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMAXw3ZZuYU&eurl and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bM-r3dDMd8&eurl.

Meanwhile, Real Clear Politics has declared Rudy the front-runner.

John McIntyre, writing in the RCP Blog, explained why Rudy has the edge on McCain:

" Leadership is going to be the single most important issue to Republican voters and this is almost certainly Giuliani's strongest asset. As long as McCain remains Giuliani's chief rival for the nomination, Rudy will hold an advantage for the simple reason that conservatives like Rudy Giuliani and do not like John McCain. Leadership and the conservative animus toward McCain are why Giuliani has the edge".

UPDATE: The RCP Blog has more on Rudy. This time it's the reactions of conservative groups who intend to fight against Giuliani because of his "liberal" social views. Check it out here: http://time-blog.com/real_clear_politics/2007/02/that_was_fast.html.

After doing some research and watching Rudy on Hannity & Colmes, it seems to me that he is the best candidate that the Republicans can have right now. There is a German term Zeitgeist, in English we have no word like it. It means the spirit of the times (if you didn’t know.) In the spirit of these times, I cannot see a better presidential candidate. Giuliani is conservative yet gives us the leeway we need for the time we live in. Now that the Democrats have control of congress we need a president that can successfully and somewhat peacefully coexist. One thing about this past midterm election gives me hope, if you look at the candidates that were elected, when you get right down to it, many of them could have been Republicans. They are few that are ultra democrats. I believe Giuliani can help us get back to the values where we began but also allow the country to grow. We need someone who embodies our Zeitgeist; I think we’ve found him in Rudy Giuliani.

I've been on Rudy's bandwagon for a while now, but I think you've nailed it with your Zeitgeist point. Rudy is just the right guy for the current state of affairs in America. It's not a case of simply supporting his "positions", it's that you get a feeling about him as a leader.
