McCain Shoots From The Lips

Here's a great sidelight on the Immigration bill and the GOP nomination.

PowerLine has a post regarding McCain losing it during final negotiations on the bill. This story gives new weight to fears that McCain has a temper and ego too great for the White House.

I think McCain is nearly 100% wrong on immigration. He's wrong on most things except for the Iraq War. I truly respect his guts and character as shown during his POW experience. I just don't think he's the right guy for the Presidency.

On a totally unrelated subject. I just called the D@C regarding a headline in its Weekend Edition. It stated:" Memorial Day Weekend offers all kinds of patriotic ways to celebrate the holiday and to honor those who have served or are serving in the armend forces"

I called to take exception to the above. It is my understanding that on Memorial Day we honor those men and woman of the armed services who died - made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It is on Veterans Day that we honor all veterans and members of the armed forces for their service in whatever role.
I was told that while I was "technically" right, that that is not how it is viewed anymore. When I asked by whom - I was told "everyone"
This is not a small matter in my opinion. Young men and woman fighting for their country died all over the world - lonely and afraid- but with courage and honor. This is their day - set by Congress to honor them. This does not dishoner other veternas- it simply sets apart and honors those who died. My question is this: Who in the hell gave the media the right to decide the intent of this day? Am I over reacting or does this also bother you?

I don't think you are over-reacting.

The D&C Editorial Board has given itself the power to tell us what to think and what to like, so it doesn't surprise me that they also feel free to revise the meaning of Memorial Day.

As I'm sure you know, Memorial Day was originally called "Decoration Day" because on that day the graves of fallen soldiers were adorned with flags and flowers. Clearly, Memorial Day is intended to honor military personnel who gave "the last measure of devotion".

Sadly, the D&C doesn't even realize that their failure to correctly identify the purpose of the day contributes to the continuing erosion of civic awareness. Gosh, the word "memorial" itself connotes reverence for the deceased.

When I take my kids to the Gates Memorial Day service, I will remind them of what the D&C doesn't get: that we have a great nation and great freedom because so many made the ultimate sacrifice for the rest of us..
